Central team to assess flood damages across Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: A seven-member delegation of the Union government will land in Kochi on September 16 before proceeding to take stock of damages from flood and landslides in Kerala. The delegation is headed by Shri Prakash, a joint secretary at the Union Home Ministry.

The representatives, which will be split into two teams, will visit several locations in the state until September 20. One team that includes Prakash will fly to Kozhikode on 17 and head to Malappuram. The team will visit Kavalappara and other areas hit by landslides. They will meet Wayanad district collector the next morning and visit locations including Puthumala where a few people had died in a landslide.

The delegation will also visit Kannur on 19.

The team also comprises K Manoharan, a director at the Union Ministry of Agriculture; SC Meena, joint director at the Union Finance Ministry and OP Suman, the deputy director at the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

The second team headed by senior engineer at the Water Resources Ministry will visit Alappuzha and Kuttanad area on 17, Thrissur and Ernakulam on 18 and Thiruvananthapuram on 19. This team includes Anita Bagal, a director at the Union Rural Development Ministry, and V V Shastri, the regional officer at the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

Both teams will be back at Thiruvananthapuram on 20, where they will meet ministers and chief secretary before discussions with the chief minister.

Kerala had witnessed heavy rains last month, exactly a year after the deluge in 2018. Several people were killed in landslides especially in the northern parts of the state.
