Thiruvananthapuram: Another Keralite diplomat who occupied key positions in India and abroad is no more. K P S Menon (Junior), who was the country’s Foreign Secretary and ambassador to several countries, passed away at his house Jacinta in Kowdiar in Kerala’s capital late on Saturday night.
He was 90.
K P S Menon (Junior) was the son of K P S Menon (Senior), India’s first Foreign Secretary and a noted writer. His mother was Palat Saraswathy Amma, daughter of Sir C Sankaran Nair, the only Keralite to become the President of the Indian National Congress.
After being the ambassador to Bangladesh, Egypt, Japan, China, Hungary and other countries, Menon (Junior) was appointed as the Foreign Secretary of India in 1987.
Menon (Junior) studied at Doon School, Dehradun; St Stephen’s College, Delhi, and Oxford. But before completing his education, he joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1951.
His initial postings included that of First Secretary in Paris and London.
Like his illustrious father, Menon (Junior) also was chosen to be the Foreign Secretary when he was the ambassador to Beijing.
Sivasankar Menon, another former Foreign Secretary, is a nephew, being the son of Malini, Menon (Junior)’s sister.
Menon (Junior) is survived by wife Lalithambika Menon, sons Sivarama Menon, Sivasankara Menon and Sidhartha Menon and daughters-in-law Pratibha and Anjana.
