The incident took place on Sunday when three girls, who had come to the area to attend a wedding reception, ventured into the pond for a bath. When one of them slipped into the deeper part, the other two tried to rescue her, only to find themselves trapped and struggling in the depths.

Witnessing the incident, Palliyalhodi Fahsah, an ASHA worker who happened to be nearby, raised an alarm. Muhammad Shamil, along with his father and brother, rushed to the spot. Without hesitation, Shamil jumped into the pond and pulled two of the girls to safety.

The third girl had sunk deeper into the pond and it was only on his third attempt that Shamil was able to reach her and bring her to the bank. He then administered CPR, drawing on the training he had received at school and managed to revive her.
