Kozhikode: In a tribute to the legendary singer Mohammed Rafi, singer Ashraf Calicut mesmerised music lovers by performing 155 of Rafi’s popular songs in a single stretch. The musical marathon, which began at 8 AM, concluded at 10 PM with the popular number `John Johnny Janardhan', drawing thunderous applause from the audience.
The crowd not only listened in rapt attention but also danced and cheered throughout the 14-hour performance, encouraging Ashraf at every turn.
Once a headload worker at Palayam, Ashraf left his job to dedicate himself entirely to music. He started his journey by singing 40 Rafi songs at the Townhall, later increasing the count to 100 and then 125. For years, he held the state record for singing 125 Rafi songs non-stop, a feat he broke yesterday by singing 155 songs over 14 hours.
Despite heavy rain in the morning, music enthusiasts arrived to witness the performance. The event took off to a start amid the downpour.
The programme was formally inaugurated by Usman Manhottam, who symbolically handed over the microphone to Ashraf. Author C P Alikoya presented Ashraf with a biography of Mohammed Rafi.
