Kochi: A young doctor from Thrikkakkara has levelled serious allegations of rape and emotional abuse against Malayalam rapper Hirandas Murali, popularly known by his stage name Vedan. In her police complaint, the woman said that after a two-year-long relationship, Vedan accused her of being “toxic” for not allowing him to 'have relationships with other women' before abruptly ending the relationship.
The complainant said she first came across Vedan on Instagram in April while doing post graduation in Kozhikode in 2021. She was drawn to his performances and interviews on his account ‘vedanwithword’ and messaged him. The two began speaking frequently and eventually exchanged phone numbers. Vedan soon expressed romantic interest, saying he wanted to marry her.
According to the complaint filed with Thrikkakkara police, the first instance of sexual assault occurred in August 2021. Vedan allegedly visited her flat to discuss a post about him that appeared on the Facebook page. “While we were talking in the living room, he asked if he could kiss me. I consented, but he then forcibly pushed me onto the bed and raped me,” she said. Vedan stayed with her for the next three days, promising marriage.
The two continued their relationship and met several times in 2022, engaging in sexual relations during these visits. However, tensions began surfacing in July 2023 after Vedan failed to meet her as promised following a concert. He stopped answering her calls, and his friends, identified as Rishi, Dabs, and Ayub, also refused to respond, she said.
The next day, Vedan allegedly turned up at her flat and told her he wanted to break up, accusing her of being possessive and preventing him from sleeping with other women. He left with his friends soon after. She said he briefly answered one call and suggested they speak calmly, but then hung up and never responded again. She has also alleged that she transferred money to Vedan multiple times for his international travel and had booked resort stays for him on several occasions.
The doctor said the breakup pushed her into depression and that she had to undergo treatment. She decided to file a police complaint after another woman came forward with allegations of abuse, and after Vedan claimed in a YouTube interview that someone else was his “first love”.
