Kerala rain: Holiday for schools in Thrissur, Kasaragod, Kannur on Wednesday

In view of the continuous and heavy rainfall in Thrissur, Kannur and Kasaragod, the district administrations have declared a holiday for all schools on Wednesday as a precautionary measure.

In Thrissur and Kasaragod, the order applies to all schools and colleges, including professional colleges, CBSE and ICSE schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas, madrasas, anganwadis, and tuition centres. However, there will be no change in pre-scheduled exams or interviews, which will be held as planned.

In Kannur, the holiday applies to only schools, anganwadis, religious education centres, and tuition centres (including special classes) on Wednesday. In addition, all mining activities and tourist entry to sites across the district have been prohibited for the day due to the red alert.

"Thrissur district had experienced relatively clear weather over the past few days, despite an orange alert on August 4. Taking into account the latest weather forecasts, alerts, and information from relevant agencies, the decision was initially made to keep educational institutions open even under a red alert issued for August 5," Thrissur District Collector Arjun Pandian, said while announcing the holiday on Tuesday.

“However, we understand the difficulties caused by the intense rain that began this morning. Your concerns are valid, and we appreciate your patience,” he added.

The IMD has also predicted that heavy rainfall will continue in the state for the next four days. It added that thunderstorms are very likely to occur along and off the Kerala coast until August 6. There is also a possibility of strong winds reaching up to 50 km/h along the coast. The weather agency has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea.

The IMD has issued a red alert for Kannur and Kasaragod districts on Wednesday and an orange alert in Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad. A yellow alert warning was issued in Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur and Palakkad districts.
