Atholi: The absence of a zebra crossing near the Government Higher Secondary School located along the state highway is posing a major safety risk. Accidents have become frequent on this busy road.
Students face significant difficulty commuting to and from the school, especially during the morning and evening hours. The PTA has appointed a security guard to assist, and on holidays, teachers themselves manage the traffic to ensure students can cross the road safely. Although a police officer was assigned at the school’s request, the availability is inconsistent.
Narrow roads mean traffic snarl-ups are a regular feature along the stretch between the school and Kuniyil Kadavu. During peak hours, vehicles often remain stuck for extended periods.
The bus waiting shelter is located directly in front of Atholi Government Higher Secondary School. As buses stop there to pick up and drop off passengers, students are often forced to cross the road without a clear view of oncoming traffic, increasing the risk of accidents. An autorickshaw stand is also situated right in front of the school. Additionally, vehicles from the Kannipoyil and Cheekkilodu areas converge at this point, further worsening the traffic situation.
PTA president Sandeep Nalupuraykkal said that police assistance is currently available only in the evenings and pointed out that having an officer present in the mornings as well would be more helpful.
Even basic signage indicating the presence of a school is missing in the area. Similar traffic and safety concerns exist near Modakkalloor AUP School, Veloor MUP School, and Kunnathara LP School within the panchayat.
