The Supreme Court on Wednesday said it would constitute a search committee to shortlist the names for VC appointments in APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University and Digital University.
A bench comprising Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan asked the Attorney General for India R Venkataramani, and Senior Advocate Jaideep Gupta, appearing for the state, to give four names each for inclusion in the five-member committee. One member will be nominated by the University Grants Commission.
The Court was dealing with a special leave petition filed by the Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar, in his capacity as the chancellor of the two state universities, challenging the Kerala High Court's judgment. The HC had quashed the appointment of temporary VCs without the state government's recommendation.
The bench has kept the matter for tomorrow for further consideration.
On July 30, the apex court had urged the Governor and the state government to resolve the issue amicably to ensure the appointments of regular VCs. SC had also clarified that until regular VC appointments are completed, it would be open for the Kerala Governor to re-appoint the present temporary VCs.
Later, Arlekar reappointed Ciza Thomas and K Sivaprasad as interim VCs of Digital and Technological Universities, respectively, which the Pinarayi government challenged.
