The installation of blind spot mirrors on all heavy transport vehicles and educational institution buses will be mandatory for the vehicle fitness test from November 1, according to the minutes of the Kerala State Transport Authority (STA) meeting held on August 8.

The decision was taken to enhance pedestrian safety, reduce road accidents, and prevent two-wheeler fatalities caused by the blind spots of heavy vehicle drivers. The move follows reports highlighting that a majority of recent accidents happened within these blind spots.

During the meeting, the Transport Authority Chairman proposed that blind spot mirrors be installed on all vehicles, including KSRTC buses. The Traffic IG suggested incorporating the requirement into the fitness test, which the STA unanimously approved. Bus operators’ associations, federations, unions, and KSRTC also extended their support to the proposal.

All Regional Transport Officers (RTOs) have been directed to provide training on the proper use of blind spot mirrors to drivers of stage carriers, heavy goods vehicles, heavy passenger vehicles, educational institution buses, and contract carriages.

Further, Motor Vehicle Inspectors (MVI) and Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspectors (AMVI) conducting driving tests must ensure that candidates are trained to use blind spot mirrors effectively during road tests. RTOs have also been instructed to issue guidelines for all driving schools to include blind spot mirror usage in their training before candidates appear for driving tests.
