Perumbavoor: Onam carol is a unique tradition in Valayanchirangara that kicks off the grand Onam festivities here. People dressed as Mahabali visit every house in Valayanchirangara to announce the arrival of Thiruvonam.
The carol, which begins on the day of Atham, continues for the next nine days. This year, two teams will visit houses, singing Onam songs and extending festive greetings.
Mahabali is accompanied by an orchestra and percussion as he visits homes to bless his subjects from Atham to Uthradam. The tradition, which started in 1985, also includes hosts serving delicious food items to the carol groups. The visits are limited to between 6.30 pm and 10 pm.
The grand Onam celebrations organised by Valayanchirangara V N Keshava Pillai Smaraka Library, Suvarna Theatres and Olympic Sports Club will conclude with a mega procession on Uthradam day. This year’s procession will feature a variety of art forms, including theyyam, thira, shingarimelam, pulikali, ammankudam, kudakali, kaikottikali, mayilattam, vilakkattam, parunthum kalakali, and kavadiyattam.
