Alathur: Patients arriving at the taluk hospital had been struggling for years due to shortage of space and facilities. The new OP building constructed using the ₹14 crore allotted by KIFB will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan next month.

X ray and lab units, immunization department and OP department would be moved to the new three-storey building. Although there are separate wards for medical, surgical, ophthalmology, obstetrics and gynaecology, the old medical ward is almost in a dilapidated state.

The authorities say that maintenance works are regularly done on the building that was constructed in 1950 to repair leakage. The taluk hospital is the busiest hospital in the district with hundreds of patients visiting the building for various purposes.

Meanwhile, more than 1000 patients reach the OP department for treatment. There are 150 beds in this hospital. Shortage of doctors too have adversely affected the functioning of the hospital. The post of the superintendent has been vacant for ages.
