Narikkuni: Officials from the Archaeological Department inspected the site where nannangadi (ancient burial urns) were found during road works in Kuttamboor. Three burial urns were discovered when the compound wall of a private property was dismantled for widening the Punnassery–Parappanpoyil road.
K Krishnaraj, Officer at the Kozhikode Pazhassiraja Museum, said the nannangadis, which were used during the Iron Age, are at least 2,000–2,500 years old. A small earthen pot was also found inside one of the burial urns. In addition, part of an ancient sword was discovered.
However, some of these items were taken away by an individual before the archaeologists arrived at the site. Officials have instructed him to return the items immediately. The officials collected the ancient remnants that survived the road maintenance works. The burial urns were covered with a rock, a unique feature of nannangadi. Two ancient laterite caves standing on pillars were also discovered in the same region a few years ago.
