Kozhikode: An old traffic police station at the headquarters of the city police department collapsed due to heavy rains. The work to dismantle the building was already underway when it fell.
The building collapsed in the evening on the Thiruvonam day. The traffic police station and the nearby offices were shifted to another building around nine months ago. The company that was given the contract for dismantling the building had begun their work ten days ago. Meanwhile, it was raining heavily on the day the building collapsed. A part of the building had partially collapsed by the evening.
There weren’t any workers on the site as it was a holiday. The policemen park their two-wheelers close to this old building. The debris was moved from the site yesterday using an earthmover. The vehicles that were parked near it aren’t damaged.
The authorities have planned to construct a four-storey building by dismantling the old building to establish the city traffic station, women’s cell and traffic enforcement office under the same roof.
