Kochi: The heart of Isaac George, a native of Kottarakkara who was declared brain dead, was airlifted from Thiruvananthapuram to Kochi and handed over to doctors at Lisie Hospital on Thursday. The organ will be transplanted into a 28-year-old youth from Angamaly, selected through the government’s Mrithasanjeevani organ transplant programme priority list.
The helicopter carrying the heart landed at the helipad of Bolgatty Grand Hyatt earlier today. Doctors from Lisie Hospital received the organ and transported it by road to the hospital under special police escort. Isaac George was declared brain dead at KIMSHEALTH Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, following a road accident. His family consented to organ donation, and his heart was allocated to Lisie Hospital.
Kochi City police made elaborate arrangements to ensure a smooth and fast transfer. The route covered Goshree Bridge, High Court Junction, Banerji Road, and Kacheripady North Bridge before reaching Lissie Hospital, a distance of about 4.1 km. Traffic was controlled at key junctions to give uninterrupted passage to the ambulance carrying the organ.
The hospital received confirmation about the availability of the heart on Wednesday night and immediately prepared for the procedure. Sources said the transplant surgery is expected to take at least three hours. This will be the 29th heart transplant surgery carried out at Lisie Hospital.
