Kochi: The Public Works Department (Buildings) has flagged the dangerous condition of the Malayalam Department building at Maharaja’s College and recommended that its use be stopped for safety reasons. The proposal includes shifting the department head’s office, the faculty room on the first floor and two classrooms on the ground floor. An estimate has also been submitted for the building’s maintenance.

In a written recommendation submitted to the college principal on Wednesday, the PWD advised shifting the furniture from these rooms to prevent accidents until maintenance is completed. Classes in the building had to be suspended when the college reopened after the Onam holidays, as a section of the roof had collapsed. Following this incident, the principal alerted the PWD through a letter. The principal had earlier issued letters regarding the deteriorating condition of the building on June 16 and July 17.

Based on these complaints, PWD (Buildings) officials inspected the structure and warned against using the toilet on the first floor, with access to the area restricted using safety tape. However, the wash basin and staff dining space on the same floor continued to be used. In the letter, the assistant engineer noted that such use was further damaging the building and increasing its vulnerability.
