Thiruvananthapuram: Bindu R, a domestic worker who was wrongfully accused in the Peroorkada theft case, has approached the Human Rights Commission seeking ₹1 crore compensation and a government job, stating that she was subjected to inhuman treatment by the police.
When the case came up before Commission Chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas on Monday, Bindu urged that the government provide her with compensation for the ordeal. The Commission has made the Additional Chief Secretary (Home), the State Police Chief, and the Thiruvananthapuram District Police Chief official respondents. Sub-Inspector Pradeep and ASI Prasannakumar, who were accused in the case, have been listed as contesting respondents. They have been directed to examine Bindu’s demand and file a written response.
Bindu, who was employed at the house of Omana, was detained at the Peroorkada police station for nearly 20 hours. She alleged that she was denied food, water and sleep, and pressured to confess to stealing a gold chain. Following widespread outrage, two officers were suspended, and police registered cases against Omana, her daughter Nisha, Sub-Inspector Prasad S G, and Grade ASI Prasannakumar.
“I can never forget what happened that day. I held their feet and begged, saying I had not taken the chain. Still, the police insisted I should return it. It was policeman Prasannakumar who harassed me the most,” Bindu said in tears.
The chain was later found under a sofa in Omana’s house during a search by the family. Omana had apparently forgotten she had kept it there. Although the family informed the police of the discovery, officers falsely claimed it was recovered from a garbage heap behind the house.
