Thiruvananthapuram: Education Minister V Sivankutty informed the Kerala Assembly on Friday that 20,032 Plus One seats remain vacant in the Malabar region, despite the completion of this year’s admission process. The figures come at a time when the area has witnessed repeated protests in recent years over an alleged shortage of higher secondary seats.

In the March 2025 SSLC examination, 2,31,116 students from Malabar — covering Palakkad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod — qualified for higher studies. Of them, 2,04,468 secured Plus One admission in the 2025–26 academic year. After online and spot admissions closed on July 31, 20,032 seats were left unfilled.

The average strength in a higher secondary class in the region stands at 56, compared to the state average of 51. However, sanctioning additional Plus One batches to balance the teacher–student ratio is not under consideration, according to Assembly documents.

Statewide, 4,26,191 students qualified for higher studies in the March 2025 SSLC exam, and 3,86,395 have taken admission to higher secondary schools in the ongoing academic year.
