Kalpetta: The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) partially eased vehicular restrictions on the Bailey Bridge on Sunday, linking the landslide-hit Chooralmala town with Mundakkai and nearby areas. Earlier, all traffic was barred on the bridge, but light motor vehicles have now been permitted to pass through.

District Collector D R Meghasree, who also chairs the DDMA, said residents, labourers, plantation workers, and farm owners will now be allowed to access the designated ‘Go Zone’ areas via the bridge. The decision followed repeated requests from farmers and plantation groups.

Vehicles crossing the bridge will require entry passes issued by the Meppadi panchayat secretary. After 6 pm, passes will be granted only for emergencies, such as medical needs. Pedestrians entering the zone must strictly follow safety protocols.

The order also clarified that traffic through the bridge will be suspended without notice if heavy rain warnings are issued. Departments, including police, revenue, and local administration, have been instructed to conduct regular inspections to prevent illegal activities in the affected areas.
