Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday forecast rain and thundershowers in Kerala until October 1. 

Orange alerts have been issued for Pathanamthitta and Idukki, forecasting very heavy rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm. A yellow alert has been declared for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad with expected rainfall of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm.

According to the IMD, a new low-pressure area is expected to form over the Bay of Bengal on Thursday. Ongoing cyclonic activity in the Pacific Ocean has already triggered an increase in rain across Kerala since last night. Heavy showers are expected to continue in the southern districts on Thursday and Friday, while northern Kerala is also likely to receive intensified rainfall as the system approaches the coast.

The IMD warned of possible impacts of the heavy rain, including waterlogging on major roads, poor visibility, traffic disruptions, flooding in low-lying regions, uprooting of trees, power outages, and damage to houses and huts. Landslides and coastal hazards also remain a risk.

Authorities have advised residents to avoid non-essential travel, stay in safe locations, and cooperate with traffic and disaster management measures.
