Kainakary: The collapse of the retaining wall along the northern bank of the Pallithodu stream — from Bakery Bridge heading east — has caused severe hardship for residents of Ward 4 in the panchayat.
The narrow stretch serves as a vital route for daily commuters, including school children, and is frequently used by cyclists and motorcyclists.
Residents have long demanded that this pathway be widened to at least three metres. However, their pleas have gone unanswered. Now, with portions of the existing path collapsing, the situation has become even more critical.
The route connects residents to several key institutions, including Kainakary Church, Gurumandiram, the local cooperative bank, Dhanalakshmi Bank, hospitals, and schools. Its deterioration has disrupted daily life and limited access to essential services.
A few years ago, when a concrete road was constructed from Bakery Bridge to Kuttamangalam, local youth stepped up to support extending the road further east. They prepared a plan for a three-metre-wide extension, clearing trees and boundary walls to facilitate the project.
Despite these efforts and an allocation of government funds, the project stalled due to land acquisition issues. As a result, while other parts of eastern Kainakary have benefitted from improved road access, residents along this stretch are still forced to rely on water transport to reach the outside world.
