Kalpetta: Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi came down heavily on the Narendra Modi government on Wednesday for refusing to waive the loans taken by the survivors of the devastating landslides in the hill district. The massive landslides had partially devastated Chooralmala and Mundakkai — two villages under the Meppadi grama panchayat in Wayanad.

In a post on X, Priyanka Gandhi criticised the Central Government for declining to waive the loans taken by the landslide-affected families, calling the decision “shocking.”

“The central government's refusal to waive the loans of those affected by the devastating Wayanad landslides of 2024 is shocking. Especially when the loans of certain large business houses are waived without any hesitation. These loans represent the lives of people who have endured unimaginable pain through no fault of their own — and they amount to a minuscule sum in comparison. The Honourable Kerala High Court has observed that when people most needed help, the Union Government failed them. I couldn't agree more,” she wrote.

Earlier in the day, the Kerala High Court had also criticised the Union Government for refusing to waive the loans of the survivors of the landslide. The remarks came while considering a case it had taken up suo motu.
