Vypin: Bus stops along the Vypin State Highway are increasingly contributing to the worsening traffic situation on the island. The problem is especially severe when buses travelling in opposite directions stop at the same location simultaneously.
Smaller vehicles attempting to manoeuvre through the narrow gaps between these stationary buses often get caught in accidents. When buses halt on both sides of the road at the same time, there is little to no space left for other vehicles to pass. This issue has been further aggravated by a reduction in road width following the construction of footpaths.
Years ago, in response to similar complaints, bus stops at certain locations—such as Edavandakkadu Aniyil—were rearranged to ease traffic congestion. However, in places like Nayarambalam Kudungassery, bus stops still operate on opposite sides of the road.
On these stretches, where the road width is already insufficient, traffic blockades have become more severe. Buses stopping in opposite directions often cause long queues of vehicles on both sides. This not only delays commuters but also results in significant loss of time for drivers of smaller vehicles, particularly during peak hours in the morning and evening.
Given the persistent nature of the problem, there is a growing demand for the Motor Vehicles Department and the police to identify such bottlenecks and rearrange bus stops to improve traffic flow.
