Thiruvananthapuram: In a special drive conducted due to the alarming increase in accidents, authorities inspected 44,146 autorickshaws, uncovered around 3,818 violations and suspended 59 licences. The operation was led by the Traffic and Road Safety Management wing.
The week-long drive, which began on 6 October, focused on identifying unsafe behaviours such as overspeeding, reckless driving and wrong-side driving. Between June and August, 330 accidents involving autorickshaws were reported, including 108 pedestrian collisions and 28 incidents where drivers lost control of their vehicles. According to an official press note, licences, vehicle documents and fitness certificates were also thoroughly checked to ensure compliance with safety norms.
Officials said that the inspections will continue and strict action will be taken against violators. The public is urged to report reckless driving and non-compliance.
