Kozhikode's Kodancherry loses a general seat with introduction of ST reservation

Kodancherry: Kodancherry, the only panchayat in the district that will not see an increase in the number of wards this time, is set to lose one general seat with the introduction of reservation for the Scheduled Tribe category.

This marks the first time that a ward has been reserved for the Scheduled Tribe community in the panchayat. Ward 2, which was reserved for women in the previous election, has now been earmarked for the Scheduled Tribe category. Similarly, Ward 7, which was also reserved for women last time, has now been allotted to the Scheduled Caste category.

In the last election, Kodancherry had nine general category wards. With one of these now coming under the Scheduled Tribe quota, the number of general seats has decreased by one. However, the number of wards reserved for women remains unchanged.

The panchayat has a total of 21 wards. Of these, eight are general wards, eleven are reserved for women and one each for the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe categories.

The general wards in Kodancherry Panchayat are:

01 – Chippilothodu, 03 – Chembukadavu, 04 – Thusharagiri, 06 – Nellipoyil, 08 – Manjuvayal, 10 – Kodancherry South, 17 – Kodancherry North and 20 – Kannoth North.

The wards reserved for women are: 05 – Meenmutty, 09 – Valiyakolli, 11 – Murabathi, 12 – Velamkodu, 13 – Mykkavu, 14 – Karimbalakkunnu, 15 – Kanjiurad, 16 – Nirannapara, 18 – Theyyappara and 19 – Kannoth South.

Ward 02 – Nooramthodu has been reserved for the Scheduled Tibe category, while Ward 07 – Koorottupaara is now reserved for the Scheduled Caste category.
