Kachithode Dam is reopening to the public, aiming to boost tourism in the Thrissur region.

Madakathara: Kachithode dam will be opened for the public, giving a boost to the tourism trend in the area. The check dam, which was revived by the Kerala Water Authority, will be inaugurated by ministers K Rajan and Roshi Augustine at 9 am on October 28.

The renovation of the check dam and its premises was headed by the Thrissur minor irrigation department. The dam that was built to control floods had witnessed gradual deterioration due to many factors. The capacity of the reservoir that had supported the drinking water projects of the nearby areas got reduced and its premises were covered in thickets and weeds, making it impossible for people to get near the dam.

Minister K Rajan then took the initiative to allot Rs 5 crore in the state budget for the project. The capacity of the reservoir has been increased significantly. Besides, the water that flows down from the surrounding hills will be collected in the reservoir and used for agriculture and drinking water purposes.

Moreover, the revived Kachithode dam would be projected as a major tourism destination in the region. Tile-paved walkways have been built across and around the reservoir. Besides, sitting spaces too have been arranged here for the visitors. Visitors could enjoy the scintillating views of the reservoir and the surrounding areas from the viewing platform that has been built into the water. Steps are built for the visitors to safely get into the water.
