Thiruvananthapuram: Police Inspector Abhilash David, who allegedly attacked MP Shafi Parambil during a lathi-charge at Perambra in Kozhikode on October 10, spent 22 months under suspension before being reinstated into service after multiple disciplinary actions.
As per the police authorities, Abhilash maintained close relations with gang leaders such as Omprakash. He also acted as an intermediary in land deals carried out by gangsters.
Another major allegation concerns a sexual harassment complaint filed by a woman at the Sreekariyam Police Station in September 2020, when Abhilash was the Station House Officer. He allegedly failed to subject the victim to a medical examination or record her statement, with serious lapses reported in the investigation.
On January 16, 2023, the then Director General of Police (DGP) Anil Kant issued an order suspending Abhilash from service. In the order, the DGP said that Abhilash had engaged in mafia and land deals during which he maintained close links with antisocial elements. The order stated that it was improper for a police officer to act as an intermediary in such transactions. At the time, Abhilash was serving as a Railway Inspector.
On January 23, 2023, the then Thiruvananthapuram City Police Commissioner, C H Nagaraju, served a notice on Abhilash, informing him that the department had decided to remove him from service temporarily. The notice was issued based on a departmental probe report, which found serious lapses on the part of Abhilash in investigating the sexual harassment complaint.
In response, Abhilash approached the DGP, arguing that the City Police Commissioner lacked the authority to serve a notice on an Inspector with the Railways, the post held by Abhilash. He also submitted an application to the DGP on September 13, 2024, seeking reinstatement in service.
On November 27, 2024, the then DGP, S Sheikh Darvesh Sahib, issued an order reinstating Abhilash to service. Abhilash returned to duty after 22 months. While his two increments were cancelled during suspension, the order reinstating him in service also restored one increment. However, the order placed the condition that Abhilash should be given a posting outside the Thiruvananthapuram district.
