Palakkad: The police here on Monday busted an illegal liquor racket and seized 1,054 litres of spirit at Chittoor. According to police, six are booked in the case. As per reports, CPM Perumatty local committee secretary Haridasan is facing charges in the case.
Kannayyan, the accused in police custody, told police that the spirit was taken to his house with the help of the CPM leader and his accomplice, Udayan.
An officer of Meenakshipuram police station said that four of the accused have been arrested, but the remaining two, including the CPM leader, are absconding. An FIR under various provisions of the Kerala Abkari Act was registered against the accused following the seizure on Monday afternoon, the officer said.
An investigation has been launched, and the search is on to trace the two absconding accused, confirmed police.
According to the police, the accused transported the spirit in 36 cans in a Bolero pickup and stored it in the property of one of the accused with the intention of mixing it with liquor for financial gain.
The police conducted the raid following a tip-off they received on Monday about the illegal storage of the spirit at the property of one of the accused.
