Thrissur: Police have registered a case against a 37-year-old woman who allegedly abandoned her newborn baby in a stone quarry at Attoor.
The accused, Swapna, a native of Attoor, had reportedly concealed her pregnancy from her husband and family members. According to her statement, she took abortion pills in the eighth month of pregnancy without informing them. Three days later, she delivered the baby at home, placed the newborn in a bag, and abandoned it in a nearby quarry.
The incident came to light two weeks later when Swapna sought treatment at Thrissur Medical College. Hospital authorities alerted the police, who launched an investigation. Based on her confession, a search was conducted at the quarry, and the decomposed remains of the infant were recovered around 1 pm on Thursday.
Forensic experts also inspected her house, where she had delivered the baby in the bathroom. Swapna is currently undergoing treatment at Thrissur Medical College.
Cheruthuruthi police have registered a case under Sections 88 and 94 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The investigation is underway to determine whether the baby was alive at the time of abandonment.
