Malappuram: Sub-Inspector Sreejith Narendran, who had earlier filed a complaint against former Malappuram SP Sujith Das over the illegal felling of trees at the SP’s camp office, has resigned from service.
In a letter sent to the State Police Chief, Sreejith stated that he no longer wished to continue in the police force and did not intend to accept any benefits from the service.
Sreejith had been under suspension for the past two years after the department took disciplinary action against him in December 2023. He said his suspension had not been revoked and that he had not received any official confirmation from the department regarding the acceptance of his resignation. He had tendered his resignation letter to the state police chief on Thursday.
Police role in gold smuggling cases
Sreejith accused several police personnel of engaging in serious irregularities and financial malpractices in cases related to gold smuggling via Calicut International Airport, Karipur.
“I have filed several Right to Information (RTI) applications seeking details about the police’s role in handling gold smuggling cases, but the department rejected all my requests citing illogical reasons,” Sreejith told Onmanorama.
According to him, police interference in over 150 gold smuggling cases through the airport had caused the country losses amounting to crores in taxes and fines. He also raised suspicions about the financial growth of a Kondotty-based gold appraiser, allegedly involved in valuing the seized gold.
“The department must clarify the fee paid to this appraiser. Central agencies should investigate his financial dealings and the police’s involvement in these cases,” he added.
He further alleged that there was a deliberate attempt to tarnish Malappuram’s image by registering a large number of cases against local residents.
Tree-felling case
Earlier, Sreejith had submitted complaints to the Chief Minister and the State Police Chief detailing Sujith Das’s alleged role in the illegal felling of trees at the SP camp office. Though the complaint was acknowledged, no action followed.
A probe by DIG Ajitha Beegam had earlier examined allegations that trees were cut and converted into furniture under Sujith Das’s supervision while he was serving as Malappuram SP. The issue had sparked controversy in 2024 when an audio clip surfaced, purportedly featuring Sujith offering to remain “obedient” to MLA PV Anvar if a complaint related to the tree-felling was withdrawn.
Anvar had also accused the DANSAF squad, led by Sujith Das, of misappropriating up to 60% of the gold seized during smuggling operations at Karipur airport — further deepening the controversy surrounding the officer.
Though Sreejith had raised graft charges against Sujith Das a year before Anvar, the department ignored his complaint. When Anvar’s allegations sparked a political row, the home department was forced to suspend Sujith Das from service on September 2, 2024. However, the government reinstated him in March 2025.
