Kalpetta: Four companies participated in the tender proceedings for preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Chippilithode-Thalippuzha bypass project, held the other day, according to the Public Works Department (PWD).

Proposed as an alternate route to the Thamarassery Ghat Road, the bypass will run almost parallel to the existing route through the mountains. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has already conducted a preliminary survey to assess the project's viability, and a report has been submitted. The Ministry will soon select the best among the four participants.

The road is being developed as part of the plan to expand National Highway 766 (NH 766) into a four-lane highway from Adivaram in Kozhikode district to Muthanga in Wayanad district, with a proposed width of 30-35 meters. The project aims to construct five bypasses, including the one along the Thamarassery Ghats stretch of NH 766. All the bypasses will be considered as a single project.

The token amount for participating in the tender was fixed at Rs 1 crore. The PWD Roads Division and the National Highways Authority jointly conducted the preliminary surveys for the project.

According to officials, the proposed road will start at Chipilithode near Adivaram and end at Thalippuzha near Lakkid, passing through Maruthilavu.

However, even after the DPR is submitted and approved, the project will still require clearance from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change to commence work.
