Malappuram: The district administration has decided to convert the service roads along National Highway 66 into one-way routes to streamline traffic and improve safety. The decision was taken during a road safety meeting chaired by District Collector V R Vinod on Tuesday.

Authorities will remove unauthorised auto-rickshaw stands, parking spaces and encroachments that obstruct the service roads. Local bodies were instructed to reorganise auto-rickshaw stands in a structured manner to avoid congestion.

Under the revised traffic plan, only long-distance buses, including KSRTC services, will be permitted to use the main highway carriageway. All stage carriage buses must operate solely through the designated service roads wherever available and may stop only at authorised bus stops. Picking up or dropping off passengers on the highway will be strictly prohibited.

Once the highway is fully operational, surveillance cameras along the route will detect violations and enable swift enforcement. The administration has also decided to remove unauthorised advertising boards, banners, petty shops and other roadside structures that obstruct drivers’ visibility or affect traffic flow.
