Thrissur: The Kerala government has formed an inquiry committee to investigate the stray dog intrusion at Puthur Zoological Park, which led to the deaths of ten deer. The panel will identify the causes of the incident, propose preventive measures and submit detailed recommendations. It was also directed to submit a preliminary report within four days and a final report within two weeks to the government, following verification by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests.

The three-member committee includes Chief Wildlife Warden Vemad G John (Chairperson and Convenor), Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Vigilance and Forest Intelligence) George P Mathachan and Chief Forest Veterinary Officer Dr Arun Zacharia.

Earlier, Dr Zacharia had clarified that the deer deaths were caused by capture myopathy, a fatal stress-related condition in wild animals, rather than by direct injuries from stray dogs. He explained that the animals died from trauma and exhaustion after running frantically in panic when the dogs entered the park.

Dr Zacharia also said the stray dogs were likely attracted by food waste dumped by staff or outsiders. “Possible entry points must be identified and sealed immediately to prevent such incidents,” he added.
