Melur: Imitation gold jewellery has been pawned at the cooperative bank in Melur against a hefty loan amount. Ten persons duped more than ₹10 lakh by pawning fake jewellery that has been gold-plated heavily in multiple layers. The incident came out when the Melur cooperative bank authorities lodged a police complaint. The authorities have also registered a complained with the cooperative registrar.
Fake gold jewellery was pawned at the bank’s head office as well as at the Palappilly, Adichili, Muringoor and Poolani branches. Although the bank’s appraiser had tested the gold’s purity using the touchstone method by rubbing the pieces on a black stone, they were heavily plated in multiple layers. However, the authorities got suspicious when a few customers began bringing ornaments in the same design and pattern for pawning. These customers were summoned to the police station after the bank authorities lodged the complaint yesterday.
Another metal was revealed underneath the layers of gold plates when one of the pieces were cut up in the presence of the customers. The bank authorities now assume that other ornaments too may have been made like this. Meanwhile, the police got a hint that another person had handed over the fake ornaments to these customers for pawning at the bank.
They will investigate the case by focussing on this person. Besides, the police suspect more such instances of pawning imitation jewellery at other financial establishments in the Chalakkudy region. Police said that a case would be registered only after gathering more evidence.
