Two boys died after drowning in a lake near Kollam on Sunday. The victims are Adithiyan (19) and Abhijith (16), both hailing from Valathungal here. Police said six youngsters had visited the Sree Veerabhadra Swami temple at Thrikkaruva, which is situated along the Ashtamudi lake.
After offering prayers, three of them, including the two who died, stepped into the water and reportedly drowned at around 10.30 am.
Local residents rushed to the spot after hearing cries for help and immediately attempted a rescue. “Although they managed to pull the three boys out of the water, Adithiyan and Abhijith were declared dead at the Kollam District Hospital,” a police official said.
The Anchalummoodu police have filed a case and begun an inquiry. Officials said the bodies will be released to the families following the postmortem.
