The Kerala State Human Rights Commission on Monday directed the state government to pay ₹1 lakh as compensation to a construction worker who was allegedly subjected to custodial torture by a police officer three years ago.
The compensation is to be paid to Suresh, a resident of Chathannoor in Kollam, who alleged that he was assaulted on August 30, 2022, while engaged in masonry work. He later developed abdominal pain and urinary difficulties and sought treatment at Kollam Medical College.
Commission Chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas said the government may recover the amount from the accused officer, P R Rahul, who is currently serving as a sub-inspector.
“If the amount is not paid within two months, interest at eight per cent must be added. The Additional Chief Secretary (Home) must implement the order and file a compliance report within two months,” the order said.
