Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that rain will intensify across Kerala under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over the southeastern Arabian Sea and a low-pressure area over the southeastern Bay of Bengal. As per the forecast, the state continue to witness rain accompanied by lightning and winds till November 26.
The IMD has sounded a yellow alert for seven districts- Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam on Saturday. A yellow alert indicates rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within 24 hours.
“Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning is very likely to occur at one or two places in Kerala from November 21 to 24, 2025. Heavy rainfall (7 cm to 11 cm in 24 hours) is very likely to occur at one or two places in Kerala from November 21 to 23, 2025,” reads the IMD alert.
As per the latest IMD forecast, moderate rain is expected at Sabarimala by 1 pm. Pilgrims are advised to exercise caution as rain is likely to lash Sannidanam, Pampa and Nilakkal. Lakhs of people are expected to visit Sabarimala today and tomorrow as the Kerala High Court has relaxed the curbs on spot booking.
Though no alert has been issued for northern Kerala, the IMD has warned that Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod and Thrissur districts are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall accompanied by lightning and strong winds, with speeds reaching up to 40 kmph by 1 pm.
Meanwhile, the Thiruvananthapuram district administration announced that four shutters of the Neyyar Dam were opened on Saturday morning amid incessant rains in the catchment area. According to the District Information Office, the dam's shutters were raised by 15 cm. The district collector has urged people living near the dam to remain vigilant.
