Edappal: Tricksters might go to any lengths to cheat people merely for fun or save themselves some extra money. Complaints are rife that fake play money for kids is being widely used in Edappal and Changaramkulangara areas to trick shop owners.

Play money notes that look similar to the 500- and 100-rupee notes are placed between real notes while handing over a wad of cash. A fake 500-rupee note was given to a shop owner at Changaramkulangara the other day.

The note looked strikingly similar to the original ones, except that Children’s Bank of India was printed instead of Reserve Bank of India at the top. Besides, the fake note is slightly lighter than the real ones.

The shop owners barely notice these during busy hours and often give the customers goods by taking the fake notes. They realise that they have been tricked only when they hand over these notes to the bank.

Such play money notes are also thrown as confetti at rallies and processions during the festival times. Meanwhile, the police, having received complaints from the shop owners are set take strict action against those who sell such fake play money notes.
