Kochi: District Collector Priyanka G IAS has directed the Kochi City Police Deputy Commissioner to take strict criminal action against those who fraudulently included themselves in the voter list in Vaduthala East Division, as well as officials who failed to act on the discrepancies. The move follows a complaint filed by Vaduthala East Councillor Henry Austin.
The complaint revealed an attempt to register 60 fake voters across five booths in Vaduthala East using 15 rental agreements made from photocopies of four stamp papers. Hearings on November 10 and 11 confirmed that 42 people were added to the voter list using fake documents, while 18 others were already removed during earlier investigations for not being residents.
The Election Cell filed a report recommending the removal of the 42 accused from the electoral roll and criminal proceedings against them after they failed to appear for subsequent hearings. Authorities attempted to remove the names from the voters’ list, but could not do so as permission to update the Election Commission’s portal was not granted.
According to the Election Commission, such cases can only be addressed after the general elections, as the final electoral roll has already been published. In this context, the District Collector directed legal action against those involved.
