Thiruvananthapuram: Police took two businessmen into custody for allegedly helping Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkoottathil evade arrest by providing him shelter during his movement from Tamil Nadu to Bengaluru.

The two resort owners, who are also Congress affiliates, assisted Rahul in travelling to the Bengaluru hideout. Police also seized a car that he reportedly used to escape arrest. After questioning the duo, officers formally recorded their arrest and later released them.

On Friday, police detained a personal staff member and a driver in the sexual assault case. Police said the duo allegedly helped Rahul evade arrest and arranged his travel while he was on the run.

The Thiruvananthapuram Sessions Court on Saturday refused to stay the arrest of Rahul in the second rape case registered by the Crime Branch based on a complaint forwarded by KPCC president Sunny Joseph. Sessions Court Judge V Anas posted the matter for further hearing on Monday.
