Thiruvananthapuram: Orator and right-wing activist Rahul Easwar alleged that the Thiruvananthapuram Cyber Police arrested him illegally and jailed him for 16 days in connection with a cyber harassment case. He was arrested on November 30 for allegedly disclosing the identity of the woman who accused MLA Rahul Mamkootathil of raping her. He was released from jail on December 15.
On Wednesday, Rahul Easwar convened a press meet in Thiruvananthapuram and sharply criticised the police. He accused them of arresting him without serving a notice.
“I faced injustice for the past 16 days. No notice was served to me before my arrest. A false case was registered against me. Now, I do not have the liberty to talk about it,” he told the media.
He also appealed to the media to investigate the police conspiracy against him.
Referring to the actress assault case, Rahul alleged that the police fabricated evidence against actor Dileep by morphing his photograph with that of the prime accused, Pulsar Suni. He accused DGP Sreelekha of framing the actor and sending him to jail for 80 days. He added that Dileep continues to be targeted even after the court acquitted him.
“Kerala will be in trouble if the police start creating evidence using Photoshop. If a common man does such an act, he will be booked,” he said.
Rahul Easwar also criticised the police for not registering a case over the alleged cyber attack against Ernakulam Principal District and Sessions Court judge Honey M Varghese. The Kerala Judicial Officers’ Association (KJOA) has alleged that the harsh remarks against the judge amount to criminal contempt and has filed a petition in the Kerala High Court seeking action.
Judge Honey M Varghese came under severe criticism on social media after she acquitted actor Dileep and three others in the actress assault case.
Rahul declared that he would continue his fight for men’s rights. On December 15, the Thiruvananthapuram District Sessions Court granted him bail in the cyber harassment case.
Listed as the fifth accused in the case, Easwar has been charged under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 72 (revealing the identity of victims of specified serious offences such as sexual crimes), Section 75(1)(iv) (making sexually coloured remarks), Section 79 (insulting the modesty of a woman), and Sections 351(1) and 351(2) (criminal intimidation). He has also been booked under Section 43, read with Section 66 of the Information Technology Act, which deals with unauthorised access to or damage of computer systems and other computer-related offences.
He was arrested based on the survivor’s complaint, and his electronic devices, including his mobile phone and laptop, were examined as part of the investigation.
Apart from Easwar, Congress leader Sandeep G Varier, Mahila Congress leader Renjitha Pulickan, Advocate Deepa Joseph, and the person who handled Deepa’s social media profile have also been booked in the case.
