In the first round of voting, Babu received 21 votes, while the CPM nominee, K T Akhiladas, secured 20. UDF candidate C A Shaji polled 12 votes as none of the candidates crossed the simple majority mark of 27. The UDF did not take part in the second round.
Babu again secured 21 votes, while Akhiladas’s count fell to 18 after two votes became invalid. The invalid votes belonged to CPM’s vice chairperson candidate Bindu Shailendran and councillor O K Hariharan.
In the 53-member municipal council, the BJP, the single largest party, has 21 seats, while the LDF holds 20 and the UDF 12. The Congress and the CPM ruled out an alliance on Thursday, leaving the council without a clear majority and paving the way for the BJP to form the council.
