Balussery:As Christmas celebrations filled homes with cheer and noise, a retired teacher in Balussery chose silence and care, turning his courtyard into a safe haven for a bulbul and her newly hatched chicks. To ensure that the mother bird and her fragile young were not disturbed, he has deliberately kept his household premises silent.
The bulbul laid its eggs and hatched two chicks in a nest built on a plant in the house yard of P C Prakashan, at Citadel near the Pallikkara Vishnu Temple near Balussery Mukku. To allow the eggs to hatch and to prevent the hatchlings from being frightened, the family has maintained near complete silence in the house.
For several days on end, Prakashan and family has refrained from starting his car parked in the nearby shed and avoided using any noise generating equipment, carefully ensuring a calm environment around the nest. Watching each stage of the chicks’ growth, he said, brought him immense joy.
Alongside taking care of this mother bird and chicks Prakashan also finds happiness in feeding birds and butterflies. This is the third time during the same season that bulbuls have chosen the premises of his home to build a nest and raise their young. A keen birdwatcher and a licensed ham radio operator, P C Prakashan is actively involved in science outreach programmes. He is also a singer with Balussery Swara Ranjini.
