Beypore: The newly commissioned Ro-Ro (Roll-on/Roll-off) Jhankar service on the Chaliyam–Beypore route was suspended during its very first trip on Saturday due to docking difficulties. Passengers, who had been waiting on both banks after hearing of the new vessel's launch, were left stranded. Following widespread protests, contractors operating the ferry service intervened and resumed operations using the older Jangar vessel.

The trouble began during the inaugural trip of the vessel, which departed from Chaliyam at 7.30 AM by carrying passengers and vehicles. Upon reaching Beypore, the jhankar, however, was unable to dock properly despite several attempts by the crew as it drifted backward every time the ramp was extended toward the jetty. After struggling in the river for nearly half an hour, the vessel finally managed to dock and offload passengers before returning to Chaliyam, where the service was subsequently halted.

The new Ro-Ro Jhankar, constructed in Kochi, arrived in Beypore on December 19. The service was launched after completion of repairs at the Beypore jetty, carried out in connection with the ongoing Water Fest . Meanwhile, the immediate suspension has sparked concerns and allegations that the service was launched without adequate preparation or necessary trial runs.

Unlike the older vessels, the new Ro-Ro vessel is powered by dual large engines and features access points at both ends, eliminating the need for vehicles to reverse during boarding. It has the capacity to transport 10 cars, 25 motorcycles and 80 passengers simultaneously. The disruption proved to be a major setback for the public, including regular commuters and tourists visiting Beypore.
