Kollam: Local residents and farmers staged a protest at Thazhuthala in Kollam district against the blocking of a water channel that connects paddy fields on both sides of the National Highway.
The channel was filled with earth by workers of the firm executing the project, reportedly following instructions from the authorities. Protesters said the obstruction would disrupt natural water flow and affect paddy cultivation in the area.
The blocked channel is located near the stretch where the service road and elevated highway had recently collapsed, raising further concerns about improper planning and drainage management.
After it was blocked, water from the canal is now flooding the paddy fields. A severe odour is also spreading in the area after some miscreants dumped garbage in the stagnant water.
Meanwhile, the polluted water in the fields is seeping underground and contaminating nearby wells. Residents, who pointed out that the situation could lead to a health crisis, have decided to form a Mylakkadu NH Action Committee in order to demand an urgent solution to the issue.
