A 26-year-old man from Assam was killed in an alleged mob-lynching incident at Perumbavoor in Ernakulam in the early hours of Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Noorul Islam.
The Perumbavoor police have booked six men, all natives of Assam, in connection with the case. They have been charged with murder.
According to the police, the incident took place at a plywood factory where the accused were staying. They told investigators that Noorul Islam had allegedly entered their living space and attempted to steal a mobile phone. The group then assaulted him, leaving him unconscious.
“The accused later took him to a hospital and informed the police while he was being transported,” an officer with the Perumbavoor police said.
Police have begun collecting statements from the accused and witnesses. Officials added that further investigation is required to establish the victim’s movements prior to the incident.
This is the fourth such case in Kerala involving the death of a migrant worker in a mob attack over the past ten years, according to Assembly records. In December 2025, Ramnarayan Bhagel (31), a native of Chhattisgarh, was allegedly beaten to death in Palakkad on suspicion of theft. Earlier, in April 2024, Asok Das (24) from Arunachal Pradesh was fatally assaulted in Muvattupuzha.
