Kozhikode: In yet another incident highlighting the poor condition of ageing buildings owned by the Kozhikode Corporation, a portion of an old structure on SM Street collapsed on Thursday evening. No casualties were reported.

The sunshade section of the building, which houses several shops, caved in around 5 pm. Local traders said a major tragedy was narrowly averted as no one was standing beneath the structure at the time of the incident.

Workers of the Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi alleged that they had repeatedly raised complaints about the poor condition of the building with Corporation authorities, but no maintenance work was undertaken.

The incident comes close on the heels of a similar mishap at Valiyangadi market, where four people were killed after a portion of an old Corporation-owned building collapsed. Following that incident, the Corporation had announced a safety audit of all old buildings under its jurisdiction. However, traders pointed out that repair and restoration works are yet to begin, raising concerns over public safety.
