I’m not cut out to be a politician: Manju Warrier

I have no plans to explore and expand my boundaries by taking a plunge into politics, says Manju.

Many people have told me that they were surprised by the news that I have decided to join the Congress party and contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. In fact, that news which appeared in a section of media has stunned me more than them. Earlier, there were rumours that I had joined the BJP and then the CPM. Now it is the Congress's turn to take me in!

I don’t think there is anything wrong in pursuing a career in politics or contesting elections. What I want to make clear is that it is not my cup of tea.

I don’t intend to join politics and I don’t want to be associated with any political party. I make a living as an artiste and I always make sure to give my hundred percent to my vocation. I take my profession very seriously because I’m well aware of the fact that people love me for what I do as an artiste.

I have done my bit - be it during the recent floods or in alleviating sufferings of people around me - within my space of being an artiste. I’m not certain how far I have succeeded in those endeavours, but they have given me immense pleasure and satisfaction. It is a great feeling to realise that my deeds have given solace to someone. To be honest, I have never thought about treading beyond my little world.

Recently, a prominent person asked me about the rumours that I may get nominated to the Rajya Sabha. My reply was that I would never do something that I’m not good at. My whole world revolves around cinema. Other than dancing and acting, I don’t know any other job and there is no requirement for me to change the field of interest of mine.

I feel journalists are being misled by certain people to publish such news. It could also be intentional, I don’t know. Don’t you remember the vicious cyberattack on the movie 'Odiyan' upon its release? It is a fact that celebrities and people who live in the limelight are at more risk for such targeted attacks.

More often than not I get opportunities to meet and interact with leaders of different political parties during various functions. I have always felt that their love and respect for me is genuine and sincere. Since that itself is a great privilege for me, I have no plans to explore and expand my boundaries by taking a plunge into politics. Let those people who are talented and skilful enough to shine in that field do it!
