Manchester United’s poor Premier League campaign showed no signs of improvement even as the season draws to a close. On Sunday, West Ham United defeated United 2-0, registering a first win at Old Trafford in 18 years.
Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen scored for the Hammers as they climbed into the 15th position on 40 points while United fell to the 16th position on 39 points. When Soucek put the Hammers ahead in the 26th minute, it was the 12th time this season that United had fallen 1-0 behind at Old Trafford, their most ever in a single season and the second-worst, only to 19th-place Leicester City.
Bowen doubled the advantage in the 57th minute when Kudus created a move before Aaron Wan-Bissaka squared the ball for a tap-in.
United could end the season on a high as they have made it to the Europa League final. Head Coach Ruben Amorim has said that the final against Tottenham Hotspur on May 21 remains the team’s focus. Winning the Europa League should give United a place in the Champions League next season despite failing to finish in the top five.
