Hong Kong defeated India 1-0 in a third round match of the AFC Asian Cup in Kowloon.

India suffered a setback on their road to the AFC Asian Cup after losing 0-1 to Hong Kong in a third-round qualification match in Kai Tak Stadium, Kowloon. Stefan Pereira scored a penalty in added time (90+5) after goalkeeper Vishal Kaith committed a foul in the box.

The win seemed deserving to the Hong Kong supporters who had filled the recently opened 50,000-capacity venue. Hong Kong have moved into lead in Group C with 4 points from two matches. Having played a goalless draw with Bangladesh in their third-round opener, India have 1 point from two outings. Manolo Marquez's India next play Singapore on October 9.

India started with Ashique Kuruniyan, leaving veteran striker Sunil Chhetri on the bench. In the first half, Kuruniyan should have scored when the hardworking Liston Colaco played a delightful low cross from the left. The Kerala winger could not adjust his body to meet the cross and put it narrowly wide.

At the other end, Kaith made a save to deny Oliver Benjamin. India were presented with another great opportunity early in the second half when Suresh found Kuruniyan, who did great on the turn but fired a left-footed effort wide.

Chhetri came on for Kuruniyan shortly before the hour and India continued to press for an opener, but a disciplined Hong Kong defence remained solid.

Colaco was India's main goal threat throughout, but the pacy winger repeatedly misfired, even hitting one high and over from a freekick. In the end, a poor attempt to punch the ball on the edge from India's goalkeeper turned a draw into defeat.
