D Gukesh is one of the favourites at the Grand Chess Tour: Sinquefield Cup to be held in St Louis, Missour, from August 18 to 28.
In search of his first title since winning the World Championship in December, D Gukesh will enter the Grand Chess Tour: Sinquefield Cup in St Louis, Missouri, United States.
The 10-round single round-robin event features 10 leading players with World No 3 Fabiano Caruana as the top seed. Besides Gukesh, India's No 1 R Praggnanandhaa is the other Indian in the classical event.
Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Alireza Firouzja, Wesley So, Levon Aronian, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Sam Sevian and Jan-Krzysztof Duda are the other competitors in the event to be held for 10 days till August 28.
Gukesh recently competed in the GCT: Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz but finished 7th among the 10 contestants after not improving his standings in the blitz variant.
In early July, Gukesh finished first in the rapid section of Grand Chess Tour Croatia, but could not win the title after failing to produce similar performances in the blitz segment, finishing third, behind World No 1 Magnus Carlsen and Wesley So.
While Gukesh is not regarded as a top player in rapid and blitz, he will definitely feel like a favourite going into a classical tournament, also because Carlsen is not participating.
